Why cassava
It grows where maize gives up, there is always a buyer for it, and nothing on the plant is wasted.
Leaves
kisamvu- Cooked and eaten as a vegetable
Stems
cuttings- Cut into pieces and planted for the next crop
Roots
mihogo- Eaten fresh
- Dried into chips
- Milled into flour
- Made into briquettes
Why farmers do well with it
Per hectare, cassava earns about three times the gross margin of maize. It handles the short rains and the dry spells that ruin maize on the coast, and the roots can wait in the ground until the farmer is ready to harvest.
There is a huge market at home and in industry. Factories use cassava for baking, cardboard, packaging, beer, starch and glue, so there is demand for both chips and flour.
What one acre can give
4,000 cuttings × 10 kg each = 40,000 kg an acre
That is our target per acre, with good cuttings and good care.
Dry chips: what you get
